Bayes Business School, City St George’s, University of London

Bayes Business School (formerly Cass) is part of City, University of London. Its stated vision is to ‘build and sustain communities of inquisitive practitioners who positively impact business and the professions, and ultimately benefit society and the environment’. It takes its name from Thomas Bayes, an 18th Century English statistician, philosopher and Presbyterian minister known for formulating a specific case of the theorem that bears his name.

The Company signed a Letter of Agreement with the Business School in August 2021 for an initial period of three years. The Agreement makes provision for the award of one prize of £500 or two prizes of £250 each year based on academic performance in an extended essay in the Strategy, Diversity and Governance core module of the Business School’s Charity MSc programme. The number of prizes is determined by the School’s Centre for Charity Effectiveness on the grounds of academic performance in the core module.

The Centre for Charity Effectiveness within the Business School recommended two students for the first awards in 2022. They were:

  1. Chelle Coulton, Co-Founder/Director of Compost London CIC, for her essay entitled ‘Practising what we preach’: A values-based approach to strategy, governance, and diversity; and
  2. Graeme Marsh, Foundation Manager of the McCarthy Stone Foundation, for his essay entitled Hybridity and success in UK corporate foundations: where do strategy, governance, diversity, and inclusion fit in the picture?

The Agreement also makes provision for students at the Business School to engage with the Company’s activities for apprentices and mentees as appropriate. In addition, the Company undertakes to provide speakers, when so requested by the School, to audiences comprising current and potential students, particularly relating to aspects of corporate or charity governance including company secretarial practice and related subjects.

In addition, individuals from the Business School are invited to attend and participate in WCCSA functions from time-to-time. In turn, individuals from the Company attend events at the School, including its ‘Flagship Programme‘ of public lectures. The Business School and the Company are happy to consider opportunities for co-operation to further research into relevant areas.
